Akismet Spam Protection Integrated Into HubSpot Blogs
As anyone who writes a blog knows, spam is a major problem. Like any other blogging platform, we’ve had our own share of spam problems with the HubSpot blog. Today we're happy to announce that we are in the middle of rolling out Akismet spam protection for the HubSpot blog to our customers.
Akismet is the best-in-class comment filtering system available today, one that monitors millions of blogs and forums and keeps up to date on the methods and tricks used by spammers in real time. Akismet has prevented over 30 billion spam comments from appearing on websites over the years, and now HubSpot is also offering you this same high level of protection.
How Do I Turn On Akismet Spam Protection?
You don't need to do anything to enable your Akismet spam protection. We believe that all our customers deserve this protection and we want to keep the product as simple as possible. To this end we are removing the enable anti-spam code from your blog options screen. This protection will now be a default setting across all HubSpot-hosted blogs.
Managing Comments Going Forward
Given the high level of spam problems that our customers have been experiencing, we knew that it was vital to get this protection in place as quickly as we possibly could. Our next step will be to build a robust comments dashboard, in which you will be able to manage all of your comments, with some frequently requested features such as bulk approval and deletion of comments. We wanted to roll out Akismet spam protection right away, though, without waiting for this next phase to be ready, because of the recent and unexpected rise in spam comments across the system.
If you do have a number of older comments that you know are spam but you never deleted, and you would like HubSpot to delete these existing comments for you, please contact support and we will be happy to clean up all old comments on your portal. Unless you contact Support for this free service, old comments will not be evaluated and deleted by the new Akismet spam protection -- only new comments received once Akismet has been activated will be affected.
